here is an animation on hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic solutions. please note that these 3 terms apply to animal systems only, not plant systems. my recommendation is that you stick to using the terms 'higher water potential' and 'lower water potential' in your answers. as for the above 3 terms, you just make sure you know what they mean.

in addition, the principle of osmosis has its application in our NE context too in the area of desalination of water. Singapore has very limited sources of fresh water and we consume large amounts of water each day. hence desalination comes as a natural solution.
